SBU Orientation Overnight
July 19 @ 9:30 am - July 20 @ 8:00 am

Mt. Irenaeus has welcomed students since the 1980’s to take a step back, breathe deeply, and refocus during the school year. We have almost 400 acres of land that includes hiking trails, a sledding hill, swimming pond, cabins, a garden, and more. The Orientation Overnight will give you time to explore the property, meet the community who lives there, spend time with other students, and learn more about how you can get involved in service both on and off campus during your time at Bona’s.
Here’s what you need to know:
- On Sunday, July 19 meet at SBU at 9:45a.m. at the McGinley-Carney Center for Franciscan ministry (also known as University Ministries).
- Your parents can drop you off and then check into their hotel/head home before your orientation session begins on Monday. A list of local hotels is here towards the bottom of the page.
- We will leave campus at 10:00a.m. and drive you to the Mountain, where we will take part in our community Sunday service at 11:00a.m. There is a community brunch afterwards that always has lots of good food!
- You’ll spend the rest of the day with other students, the Mountain and UMin staff. We’ll end the day with a cookout, time in our chapel, and a bonfire with s’mores if the weather is good!
- After the overnight, we will eat breakfast and bring you back to campus for your orientation session. You will arrive in time for check-in and registration.
Here’s what to bring:
- Clothing for an overnight stay, plus clothing to wear to your orientation session
- Personal items and toiletries, any medications, etc.
- Clothes and close-toed shoes that you can wear outside while exploring or if we take a hike
- Bathing suit and sunscreen if you want to jump in the pond
- We provide all of the linens (towels, sheets, pillows, blankets)
