Remembering Fr. Dan Riley
It is hard to believe that one year has passed since we lost our Founder and Animator, Fr. Dan Riley, ofm. His significant passing is noted in all the remarkable stories we’ve heard over the past 12 months, friends sharing moments of Dan’s unceasing presence, and how he helped through significant moments, whether in times of elation or times of darkness.
Fr. Dan impacted generations of people across the country, around the world and, of course, at St. Bonaventure University. On this webpage, we’ve brought together many of the ways he offered himself and the ministry of Mt. Irenaeus to the world and into our hearts. Take time now, in a month, in a year and for generations to come to listen to his wisdom and love through various mediums (including his book, “Franciscan Lectio”). In the coming months, we’ll add more content, such as his artwork to reflect upon.
In our founding vision statement, Dan wrote, “We wanted a place, but more than that, a community in the spirit of prayer and hospitality.” At this time of remembrance, and perhaps sadness, let’s honor Fr. Dan by continuing to build a community that supports one another in all seasons, as Fr. Dan always did for so many.
Even though Fr. Dan’s passing one year ago was a significant loss beyond words, the Mountain is still thriving. We’re remaining true to our founding documents, while also refining and expressing with more clarity our strategic direction focused on three peaks: SBU students, adult formation and the larger Franciscan world. Dan served all three of these peaks for 60+ years and we’re continuing his legacy at the Mountain, on campus, On the Road and online.
Fr. Dan loved sharing near daily posts on Instagram. He would often spend 30-60 minutes capturing an image, composing the words and praying before he published each of the 4,500+ posts.

Many people have asked how they can support Fr. Dan’s legacy. If you’re inclined, we would welcome donations to the Mountain Fund which helps underwrite the ministry as we invite students, adults and friars into our circle. If you would like to discuss other ways to support the Mountain through our endowment fund, please reach out to Mt. Irenaeus’ Rob Buckla at [email protected].
